Iranian lawmaker says Hormuz plan puts control of waterway under armed forces

Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei says a proposed security plan for the Strait of Hormuz would place the waterway’s management, monitoring and inspection exclusively under Iran and its military, Al Jazeera reports citing state broadcaster IRIB.

Under the plan, the entry of vessels deemed hostile, involved in espionage or a threat to Iran’s national security would be prohibited, and the military’s General Staff would establish rules for collecting transit fees and service charges from vessels passing through the strait.

Rezaei adds that if Iranian interests are harmed anywhere in the world, Tehran can “respond against the state it considers responsible in the Strait of Hormuz by raising tariffs or seizing assets”.
