Iranian official dismisses US claims of petrol shortages as ‘baseless lies’

Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security commission of Iran’s parliament, says the claims made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Iranians are queueing for hours for gasoline are “nothing but baseless lies”, Al Jazeera reports.

In a post on X, he writes: “Take this as a lesson and refrain from repeating your miscalculations, or else the victorious armed forces will give you an unforgettable lesson.”

Azizi has also reposted a video by Iran Press that said people in the country were filling up their vehicles in “just three to four minutes rather than waiting for hours”.

His comments came after Bessent told the House Financial Services Committee on September 15 that there was a three to four-hour waiting line at petrol stations in Iran after his department tightened economic sanctions on the country.
