Iraq has proposed establishing a “joint security council” with Iran and Saudi Arabia to ease tensions between the two regional powers, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reports quoting Iraqi National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji.

Al-Araji says the proposal has been presented to both Tehran and Riyadh and attributed tensions between the two countries to a “crisis of trust”.

“The problem between the two countries is a crisis of trust,” al-Araji tells state broadcaster Iraqiya TV, providing no additional details about the proposed council.

Neither Iran nor Saudi Arabia have immediately commented.
