Iran and Oman have discussed a “phased framework” that could provide a practical and enforceable basis for moving matters related to the Strait of Hormuz forward.
According to a joint statement issued by Iran’s foreign ministry, the foreign ministers of the two countries held constructive consultations focused on the importance of resuming safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
In view of the current situation, the two ministers discussed a phased framework that could provide a practical and enforceable basis for moving matters forward.
“The proposed framework includes creating a joint temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project for clearing the Strait of mines.
“Technical negotiations between the two sides will continue with the aim of agreeing on a permanent maritime corridor, the future management of the Strait, and a mechanism for information exchange, traffic management, and the provision of relevant maritime and security services.”
In this regard, both sides emphasised the importance of holding dialogues with neighbouring countries bordering the waters of the Persian Gulf and stressed the necessity of respecting applicable international law and the sovereignty of coastal states, the foreign ministry concluded.
