Tim Constantine, a senior writer at The Washington Times, has termed US President Donald Trump’s decision to expand economic sanctions against Iran a part of a well-thought-out strategy that will yield dividends fast.

“You haven’t ruled out the military option if you’re Trump, but you’re using the economic option as a stranglehold on the economy and on the ability of Iran to generate revenue,” Constantine told Al Jazeera.

He said US sanctions could effectively hasten Iran’s decision to reach a settlement because “by Iran’s own estimate, it was somewhere between $200bn and $300bn worth of damage” from the war.
