Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have said that a cleric was killed in a northwestern province, labelling it an attempt by separatist groups to sow sectarian divisions between its citizens, AFP reports.
It was not immediately clear when the incident took place but the Guards said the cleric, Mohammad Nezhati, was “unjustly martyred in a brutal terrorist crime committed by Zionist-American separatist groups”.
The Guards added that Nezhati was also a member of the volunteer paramilitary Basij forces, which operate under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological arm of Iran’s military.
