Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim Mohamed al-Budaiwi says that the Strait of Hormuz must not be turned into “a bargaining chip”, Al Jazeera reports.

Speaking at the University of Utah, he calls on the international community to “assume its responsibilities to restore stability and ensure that the strait remains open to international navigation, in accordance with international law”.

He condemns Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries and recent regional escalations, adding that Qatar and Oman continue to keep “communication channels open during the confrontation between Iran and the United States of America, seeking just solutions that take into account legitimate security concerns and spare the peoples of the region further suffering”.
