KARACHI: All clocks and watches in Western Pakistan were put back an hour last night [Sept 30] due to the new Pakistan Standard time which came into force at midnight. Till late at night people in Karachi were worrying about, “Now at what time do we go to office”, or “when does your school begin on Monday?”

Two people standing at a bus stop near Lalukhet last evening were arguing as to the use of this change. One of them, a labourer, was of the opinion that this change was only a device to take more work from the people. The other was trying in his own way to convince him that the new time was the real time according to the sun. A middle-aged worker was trying to link up the change in time to the present tension between Pakistan and Bharat. He was basing his arguments on the fact that during the war a similar change had been made in the time.

A little boy, student of a kindergarten school, was very upset because he felt that on Sunday night he would go to bed at the usual time but would have to get up one hour earlier on Monday morning. — Staff correspondent
