KARACHI: Five suspected robbers were killed in an alleged police encounter in the New Karachi Industrial Area during the early hours of Tuesday.
A police spokesperson said that, acting on a tip-off, officers conducted a raid near the G-23 bus terminus under the Lyari river bridge. As the police reached the site, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire. Police retaliated, killing all five suspects on the spot.
Police said they recovered a car, a motorcycle, four pistols, a sub-machine gun and mobile phones from their possession.
The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
The deceased were identified as Nadeem Ali, 35, Ghulam Abbas Jogi, 35, Sarfaraz Shafiq, 33, Naveed Azizullah, 35, and Asif Ali, 33.
Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said the victims sustained multiple bullet wounds to the head and chest.
As per the spokesperson, the suspects were allegedly involved in the killing of a milk trader, Nasir Khan, who was shot dead while resisting a robbery on April 20 within the jurisdiction of the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police station.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar commended the police for the operation and said: “I appreciate the police for successful action against criminal elements. There is no place for criminals in Sindh.”
He said it was their top priority to fulfill the trust of the citizens and vowed the protection of life of people would be ensured at any cost.
