KARACHI: Another case of mpox was detected in the city on Sunday when a 35-year-old man tested positive for the viral infection, raising the tally to 36 in Sindh.

Sources said the patient, a resident of Landhi and a driver by profession, had no foreign travel history.

He is currently under treatment at the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital & Research Centre (SIDH&RC). It’s the eight mpox case at the facility and 11th in the city.

On Saturday, a 40-year-old man, a resident of Gulistan-i-Jauhar, with no foreign travel history, tested positive.

At least nine deaths from the infection have been reported this year in the province.

In April, an outbreak of mpox — a zoonotic disease earlier restricted to people with a history of foreign travel — was reported from Khairpur, claiming multiple lives of newborns followed by several cases in Karachi.

According to the WHO, mpox can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle ache, back pain and low energy. Most people fully recover, but some get very sick.

The disease can be transmitted through close contact with someone who has mpox, with contaminated materials, or with infected animals. During pregnancy, the virus may be passed to the foetus, or to the newborn during or after birth.
