SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A police constable was martyred and another person injured in a firing incident in Sararogha tehsil of Upper South Waziristan on Wednesday, while five members of the Sulemankhel tribe were allegedly abducted by armed men in Gulkuch area of Lower South Waziristan, officials said.
According to Upper South Waziristan deputy commissioner Irfan Ali, unidentified armed men opened fire in Sararogha, killing police constable Abdul Nawaz and injuring another person.
The injured was taken to a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan, while the assailants fled the area after the attack, the deputy commissioner said.
He added that police registered a preliminary report and launched an investigation into the incident. The authorities were trying to ascertain the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible, he said.
In a separate incident, five members of the Sulemankhel tribe were allegedly abducted by unidentified armed men in the Gulkuch area in Lower South Waziristan.
Lower South Waziristan district police officer (DPO) Shah Hassan said the incident took place in the village of Gardaow, where members of the Sulemankhel tribe lived.
He said the armed men stopped five people in the village and checked their mobile phones before taking them away.
According to the DPO, Gardaow is situated on the southern bank of the Gomal River and is adjacent to Zhob district of Balochistan and the jurisdiction of the Sambaza police station.
Mr Hassan said police were investigating the incident and making efforts to trace the abducted people. Further details would be shared as the investigation progressed, he added.
