A spectacle of frenzy and fascination

KARACHI: A Bridal Festive show held at Karachi’s Expo Centre was less of an exhibition and more a spectacle of mass frenzy and sheer fascination. By early evening, the venue had turned into a mass theatrical prelude to what awaited inside: rickshaws lined both sides of the entrance and entire families arrived in relentless waves from neighbourhoods across the city. Hall No. 5 was, quite simply, besieged.

The queue stretched well beyond the main hall entrance and towards the parking area, with crowds pressing forward in anticipation of big bargains. Women, mainly in hijab and accompanied by children, formed the overwhelming majority of those attempting to make their way inside the Kashee’s Bridal Festive show, while bored-looking menfolk waited patiently outside.

Kashee’s emerged on to Pakistan’s beauty landscape in 2000 with elaborate, mile-high bouffants, carpet-thick lashes and kaleidoscopic eye make-up. Soon, Kashee’s signature bridal makeover became the talk of the town. The all-too-familiar girl-next-door would enter the Kashee’s salon on main Tariq Road and emerge as a larger-than-life interpretation of herself: ornamented, sculpted and transformed to such an extent that the result bordered on theatrical reinvention as fantasy replaced reality. And the standard Kashee’s client couldn’t get enough of it!

Then began the expansion, as wigs and hair extensions, cosmetics, bridal and festive wear were introduced in the next phase. Kashee’s had constructed an entire ecosystem around the idea of transformation.

His post-Covid-19 bridal presentation in 2022, in collaboration with Hum Network at the PC Marquee, featured an endless procession of television personalities and showbiz favourites walking the runway for him.

In the years since, the aesthetic has evolved and been toned down considerably. Earthier palettes, softer pastels and comparatively restrained bridal silhouettes have now entered his fashion interpretation.

Inside the show venue, the Dastaan-i-Ishq runway was an extended manifestation of Kashee’s universe. One after another came waves of festive ensembles and meticulously constructed looks for mayun, mehndi, nikah and valima, presented first by some of the country’s leading models and followed by an expansive parade of drama artists, TikTokers, digital creators and social-media celebrities.

And lest the evening become an exclusively feminine fantasy, the grooms were not forgotten. Menswear sherwanis punctuated the fashion procession, signifying the broader vision of the Kashee’s wedding universe.

Former model and show choreographer Vaneeza Ahmed, aka Vinny, sums it up best: “I’m totally floored by the level of craftsmanship and the price range it’s being offered at to customers.”
