RAWALPINDI: Heavy rain lashed the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Saturday morning, turning the weather pleasant.

The rain started at 8:40am and continued for an hour, bringing the mercury down to 29 Celsius. Many downtown areas were flooded with rainwater.

The district administration, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), civil defence department and Rescue 1122 remained on high alert to deal with any emergency.

On the other hand, power supply remained suspended causing problems in some areas. Iesco officials said they suspended electricity supply due to the rainy weather.

The Meteorological Department recorded 3 millimetres (mm) of rainfall at Saidpur, Golra and airport, 4mm at Bokra and Zero Point in Islamabad, 7mm at Shamsabad, 10mm at Kattarian, 1mm at Pirwadhai, 3mm at Gawalmandi and 2mm at Kutchery in Rawalpindi. It forecasted clear weather in the twin cities in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, rainwater accumulated at Committee Chowk and Faizabad underpasses as well as at the metro bus stations. Wasa officials remained busy in the afternoon to drain out the water.

A Met official said that moist currents were penetrating upper/central parts of the country. A westerly wave is also affecting upper parts of the country and likely to persist till tomorrow.

He said hot and humid weather is likely in most parts of the country. However, rain-windstorm/thundershower is expected at scattered places in upper/central

Punjab and at isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir.

“Leh Nullah remained normal at 4.5 feet and the situation was under control due to dredging of the nullah before the monsoon,” said Wasa Managing Director Azizullah while talking to Dawn.
