There was no issue of the paper on Sept 7, 1976 on account of the Defence Day holiday. The excerpt below is taken from the previous day’s edition.

THE Karachi Bar has urged the Government for the withdrawal of the Fifth Amendment Bill. The Association’s general body meeting ... felt that High Court judges are being subjected to various compulsions unknown in the annals of judiciary purely with a view to curtail the inerrant powers … enjoyed by them... . “This total curtailment of the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court … only betrays a lack of confidence in the system of administration of justice in the country,” the meeting observed.

[Meanwhile, as per a separate news agency report,] ... rain followed by devastating floods, ravaging the province [of Sind], have left 42 people dead, and over one lakh dwelling houses razed to the ground, Mr Hazar Khan Bijarani, Provincial Revenue Minister, disclosed here yesterday [Sept 5]. Giving a detailed account of the devastation wrought by rain and floods … the Minister said that a total of 5,184 villages were engulfed affecting 7,17,950 people in the province.
