US wholesale inflation picked up more than expected in August, government data shows, driven by higher energy costs in the month as the US war on Iran continues.

The Producer Price Index was up 5.4 per cent year-on-year last month, the Department of Labour said.

This was above analysts’ expectations and on a month-on-month basis, PPI climbed 0.4pc.
