ISLAMABAD: Retired employees of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) have requested the federal minister and secretary of the Ministry of the Inter-Provincial Coordination to take notice of the delay in release of their pension of the last two months.

In a press release issued by the former employees on Tuesday, they sought restoration of regular, uninterrupted, and timely payment of pensions in future and protection of the rights and dignity of the retired employees who served the PSB diligently for decades.

They had been receiving pensions regularly since 2006 without any objection or adverse observation from any competent forum, including the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP), Commercial Auditors, the Ministry of Finance, and the IPC Ministry, the release added.

“This longstanding practice reflects the legitimacy and transparency of the pension system that has remained in place for nearly two decades.

“In its 34th Board Meeting, the Board approved the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in accordance with the Federal Government’s policy with effect from July 1, 2025.

“Accordingly, monthly deductions at the rate of 10pc of the basic pay are being made from serving employees, while existing pensioners are contributing at the prescribed rate, which is to be enhanced to 20pc upon attaining the age of 72 years,” read the press release.

The retired employees said that the government’s policy clearly provides that the Contributory Pension Scheme shall apply only to employees appointed on a regular basis on or after July 1, 2024.

“However, contrary to the government’s policy, deductions have also been imposed on existing PSB pensioners, effectively applying the scheme retrospectively. This has caused serious concern among the retired employees, who believe that the policy was never intended to affect individuals who had already retired before its implementation,” they said.

The pensioners claimed: that the situation had become even more distressing due to the re-appropriation of the third and fourth quarter grants by the Ministry of IPC for the release of funds to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

“As a result, the PSB has been facing severe financial constraint and [the] pensioners have not received their pensions for the last two months. “During a period of unprecedented inflation and rising living costs, the non-payment of pensions has caused immense financial hardship to the retired employees,” they said.

When contacted by Dawn on Tuesday night to get the official stance on the subject, PSB director general Yawar Hussain said: “Right now, I can’t talk on the matter. You may contact [me] tomorrow [during] official time.”
