BATTAGRAM: At least four people were killed as flash floods triggered by heavy downpour coupled with hailstorm lashed several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday.

A boy and his sister were killed and their mother suffered injuries in a flood-related incident in Kund area of Allai tehsil. The siblings, identified as Sonia, 7, and Zohan, 4, along with their mother were washed away by floodwaters.

The girl’s body is missing, according to assistant commissioner Mohammad Saleem. He said the woman suffered injuries and was shifted to the tehsil headquarters hospital in Bisham.

Mr Saleem said search for the body was under way, with Rescue 1122 teams from Battagram and Shangla, along with district administration, participating in the rescue operation.

He said the affected family belonged to Chakesar tehsil and was visiting their relatives in Kund when the incident occurred.

The official said that the heavy rain triggered a flash flood and washed away four houses. He said the flash flood brought boulders and stones damaging several other houses in Kund.

In Mansehra, a woman and her daughter were swept away in a roadside nullah amid heavy rain and hailstorm in the Sainabad area in the heart of the city here on Thursday night.

“The rescuers have found the body of the woman after hectic efforts downstream, and the search for her daughter is still underway,” a press release issued by the police department said.

Saima Bibi, 40, along with her daughter, was on her way back home to the Sahibabad area when both suddenly slipped into the roadside nullah and were swept away by the torrents downstream.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the City police station, while the body was recovered within the jurisdiction of the Lari Adda police station and shifted to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital.

According to the police and Rescue 1122, the search for the girl was still underway. The late-night heavy downpour and hailstorm hit the upper parts of Hazara division, including Mansehra, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Kolai-Palas.

Meanwhile, the Karakoram Highway was blocked by a landslide after torrential rains caused flash floods in the Butyal area of Bisham, affecting several houses.

According to assistant commissioner of Bisham Syed Javed Iqbal, the main KKH was closed to traffic after the landslide hit it.

He said several houses in Butyal were destroyed by the flooding, while some were partially damaged.Heavy rain coupled with a hailstorm on Wednesday night damaged maize crops and vegetables in several areas of Bajaur and Mohmand districts.

Bajaur residents said the heavy rains started at about 8pm and continued for around one and a half hours, while the hailstorm was reported in several areas.

They, however, said Salarzai, Khar and Mamund tehsils were the most affected by the hailstorm, which caused extensive damage to the maize crops and vegetables.

“The large hailstones have badly affected the maize crops on vast tracts of land which were near harvesting, as well as vegetables,” Ajab Khan of the Naraza area in Salarzai tehsil told Dawn.The hailstorm also damaged windscreens of several vehicles and scores of solar panels installed on rooftops and other infrastructures in Khar and Salarzai.

In Mohmand, severe hailstorm damaged 127 kanals of crops and 146 solar panels in parts of Ambar tehsil, according to a preliminary assessment conducted by the district administration and relevant departments on Thursday.

The survey conducted by agriculture and livestock department identified 21 affected farmers, with chilli accounting for the largest share of crop damage at 84 kanals, followed by sorghum at 32 kanals, bitter gourd at 7.5 kanals, bindi at 1.5 kanals and turnip at two kanals.

Officials collected details of the affected people and said the data would be uploaded to the Digital Disaster Compensation Management App in accordance with the PDMA policy.
