THATTA: An Indian civet cat, known locally as pooneh billi, was freed from a bird poacher and released back into the wild in the Jhangisar area of Thatta on Saturday.

The cat had walked into the trap laid by the poacher, who took it to Baghan Market near Keti Bunder to sell it.

An activist of the Local Support Organisation, Ilyas Samoon, contacted the World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan and informed its local officials about the matter. He led a WWF-P team to the market and purchased the cat for Rs300 from the poacher, who demanded the token money as transport expenses.

The poacher took the WWF-P team to the place where the cat got caught in the trap.

The feline was subsequently released back into the wild.

No action was taken against the poacher for his cooperation with the WWF-P team.
