UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations on Sunday appealed to India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum” restraint amid escalating tensions between the two countries along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region.

“The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (Unmogip) observed and reported an increase in military activity at the Line of Control in recent days,” the UN secretary general’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement e-mailed in response to a question.

“The United Nations appeals to both sides to exercise maximum restraint to ensure that the situation does not further deteriorate,” the statement said.

The Unmogip was deployed in January 1949 to supervise the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the disputed region. While Pakistan allows UN observers to monitor the LoC, India does not.

The group, based in Rawalpindi, comprises 44 military observers, supported by 25 international civilian personnel and 47 local civilian staff.

UN still sees it as a bilateral tension & why not directly tell india to stop oppressing Kashmiris which is causing tension in the whole region. Putting equal responsibility on both countries for what is happening is hard to understand.

I am sick of these useless neutral statements from UN and others. India has been the aggressor while Pakistan has shown restraint and acted only in self defense. Why don't these hypocritical world leaders and international bodies sanction indian inhumane treatment of Kashmiris? If this war starts, be sure it will be catastrophic and will not end until one of the two is eliminated permanently since apparently we cannot coexist. Are you ready for this?

UN must start getting away with this 2 sided notion now it keeps repeating. What has Pakistan to done or to do with that it is being advised to show restrain? Our side is already at peace neither we are beating war drums inducing thousands of personal. This shows that UN is some what useless in major matters of today.

Nothing new from UNSC. Such statements been issued in past. The reality is out of 18 districts of JK only 4 have unrest which are bordering Pakistan and part of valley. We Pakistanis should understand this fact rather than saying whole JK is burning.

india openly commits heinous act of state terrorism in kashmir and even used cluster bombs. Still united nation is asking both sides to refrain. it is like a person killing other person and the third person watching it and call the police. instead of stopping the criminal, police ignore the rights of victim and deal with criminal and petitioner at same level. height of hypocrisy. where are human rights organizations of the whole world?
