KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday announced the launch of inter-city Peoples Bus Service (PBS) routes in several districts and decided to purchase 1,000 additional pink electric scooters for women as part of efforts to expand the province’s public transport network.
It was also announced that new electric, double-decker and hybrid buses would be introduced in Karachi.
The announcements were made at a meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also holds the transport portfolio, at his office.
Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority Salimullah Odho and other relevant officials attended the meeting.
Detailed discussions were held on new PBS routes, distribution of pink electric scooters, the e-taxi service, and ongoing and proposed mass transit projects.
Various projects aimed at providing environmentally friendly and quality transport facilities to citizens were also reviewed.
Transport department officials informed the meeting that more new buses would arrive in Karachi over the next few months to further improve public transport facilities for citizens.
The senior minister said that inter-city bus services would soon be launched in various districts, including Larkana, Dadu, Sehwan, Hyderabad and Sanghar.
It was announced at the meeting that new routes from Khairpur to Rohri and Khairpur to Ranipur would begin next week.
The minister instructed officials to ensure immediate resolution of issues related to the registration of pink e-scooters. He instructed the relevant authorities to further accelerate ongoing projects so that people could benefit from these facilities as soon as possible.
The minister said that the Sindh government was taking practical steps to empower women and provide them with safe and dignified transport facilities.
He added that the government was making serious efforts to provide modern, safe and high-quality transport services to the public.
