Charlie the Wonderdog is a fun family movie about a dog who gets superpowers after meeting aliens. But the movie is not only about action and adventure. Directed by Shea Wageman, who is known more for producing films for kids, Charlie’s voice is done by everyone’s favourite, Owen Wilson. One night, Charlie is taken away by aliens and later comes back home with amazing superpowers. He can talk and fly, but Charlie’s arch-nemesis also gets powers. The next-door cat, Puddy, turns evil with that.
Voiced by actor Ruairi MacDonald, Puddy terrorises his master, who had neglected him before he was abducted. Their fight feels like a superhero battle between a dog and a cat, almost like Superman is fighting Lex Luthor, but in a funny, family-friendly way. One funny moment even shows a kind-hearted Charlie getting hungry and grabbing food before he goes on to save a falling airplane.
The animation in the movie is bright and colourful, making it fun to watch. The action scenes are exciting too, especially when Charlie first learns how to use his powers. Puddy is not very scary, but he is funny and annoying at the same time. Charlie is the heart of the movie because he is cute, kind and loyal. Like most dogs, he only wants love, friendship, food and to feel part of the family.
Overall, this 90-minute movie is sweet, funny and full of heart. It gives a positive message about kindness, friendship, teamwork and loyalty.
