SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: At least five people were killed and two others injured in an exchange of fire between two sub-clans of the Sulemankhel tribe over a land dispute in Gul Kach area of Toi Khulla tehsil in Lower South Waziristan on Saturday, police said.
According to Lower South Waziristan DPO Muhammad Tahir Shah Wazir, the armed clash erupted between members of Khatiankhel and Kamrani sub-clans over a long-standing dispute concerning a piece of land and an approved road project in the area.
The exchange of fire resulted in death of five individuals from both sides, while two others sustained injuries. The injured persons were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital Wana.
Hospital officials said that both the injured were under treatment and that medical staff were making every effort to save their lives.
Police sources said tension between the two groups had persisted for long time over ownership and demarcation of the land. The dispute allegedly intensified in recent weeks before culminating in the deadly confrontation.
Following the incident, police personnel reached the area, brought the situation under control and enhanced security measures to prevent any further escalation. Local police have also initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the clash.
According to police records, three members of the Kamrani sub-clan identified as Allah Dad and Mustafa, sons of Sado Khan, and Qari Zaheer, son of Janan, were killed in the firing.
From the rival Khatiankhel group, Naimat, son of Said Shah and Saidu, son of Allah Noor, lost their lives. Two other individuals Mohammad Alam, son of Naimat, and Ayub, son of Allah Noor, suffered injuries.
Police said a report of the incident had been registered at Toi Khulla police station, and legal proceedings were under way. Investigators are examining all aspects of the case including the origin of the dispute and the events leading up to the exchange of fire.
DPO Muhammad Tahir Shah Wazir said a comprehensive investigation has been launched and that those found responsible would be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
