BAJAUR/DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A police official was martyred and another suffered injuries as terrorists attacked a police post in Barang tehsil of Bajaur tribal district in the early hours of Friday.

Mansoor Khan, a spokesperson for the district police, confirmed the attack, saying a group of terrorists targeted a police post in the Kohi Sar area of Barang tehsil with rocket launchers and small arms.

He said that police personnel at the post immediately retaliated.

The official said that two police personnel were wounded in the exchange of fire between police and the attackers, which continued for several hours.

Terrorist attacks on DI Khan police stations foiled

The spokesperson, however, said that one of the policemen, identified as constable Zahir Shah, succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local hospital.

The injured policeman, identified as head constable Amirzada, was reported to be out of danger.

“Although one policeman was martyred and another was wounded in the attack, the police personnel at the post bravely retaliated and successfully foiled the terrorists’ nefarious design,” he said.

Later, funeral prayers for the police official were held at the Police Lines in Khar, where Deputy Commissioner Adnan Farid, DPO Khan Zeb Momand and officials of the security forces were in attendance.

Local elders, policemen, and political and social activists also attended the funeral prayers of the martyred cop before the body was dispatched to his native area for burial.

The deputy commissioner, DPO and others, while paying tribute to the slain cop, said that the entire Bajaur was proud of his great sacrifice in foiling the terrorist attack bravely.

They noted that the people of Bajaur, district administration, police and security forces are united against terrorists to make the district free of them forever.

ATTACKS FOILED: Separate attacks on Daraban and Prova police stations in Dera Ismail Khan district were foiled late Thursday night, police said.

Police sources said terrorists opened fire on Prova police station with heavy weapons late on Thursday night.

Police personnel deployed at the station responded promptly, forcing the attackers to flee under the cover of darkness.

Earlier, terrorists targeted Daraban police station with small and heavy weapons. Police personnel took positions and returned fire, forcing the attackers to abandon their attempt, the police sources said.

Following the two incidents, police and security forces launched search operations in the areas around both police stations to trace the attackers.

All police stations and checkposts across the district were later placed on high alert, while efforts to locate the fleeing terrorists are under way, according to the police official.

Meanwhile, suspected terrorists attacked the City police station in Tank late on Thursday night by hurling hand grenades and opening fire, officials said.

According to police, the attackers hurled two hand grenades at the police station. However, no casualties were reported.

The police personnel returned the fire, forcing the attackers to flee.

The police and security agencies later launched investigations and initiated a search and clearance operation in the area to arrest the suspects and maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, two people, including the brother of a former peace committee head, were killed by gunmen in the Jandola subdivision of the Tank district on Friday, police said.

According to police, the deceased were identified as Sangari, brother of former peace committee head Nasrullah Naimatkhel, and Azizur Rehman Khisrai.

Police said that unidentified assailants opened fire on the two, killing them on the spot, and fled. Rescue 1122 teams shifted the bodies to a hospital.

The police registered a first information report before starting an investigation to identify culprits.
