RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: A couple was killed, and their daughters were injured after the roof of their house collapsed on Tuesday following three days of heavy rainfall in Madina Town, located in Shahzad Town.

The deceased were identified as Jamil, 61, and his wife, Kausar, 55. In the incident, the couple’s twin 18-year-old daughters, Mashaal and Mishal, also sustained injuries.

The police said the family of four, including Jamil, a labourer, resided in a one-room house made of bricks and mud.

Apparently, the roof of the house was damaged due to the three days of heavy rainfall. As a result, the roof collapsed early in the morning, and the family was buried under the debris.

After receiving the information, the police and the rescue workers reached the spot and retrieved the injured from the wreckage.

Later, the injured were taken to the hospital for medical assistance. Kausar was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Jamil died during treatment.

Meanwhile, heavy rain in the morning, inundated low-lying areas in the garrison city and bringing the temperature down.

The rain started in the early morning and continued till 10am, varying from light to heavy.

Rainwater accumulated on roads and streets, creating difficulties for commuters. At many parts of the garrison city and cantonment, traffic signals stopped functioning, leading to traffic chaos. The power supply was suspended in low-lying areas by Iesco for the safety of human lives. The strong spell of rain exposed the performance of civic bodies in the city and cantonment areas.

The sewer system in downtown and the areas adjacent to Leh Nullah were choked and water entered houses and shops. Rainwater also accumulated at Committee Chowk Underpass and the road was closed for traffic.

Wasa installed water sucking machines at the underpass and on other main roads to drain out the water.

People had a tough time in draining out water from their houses in many areas such as Dingi Khoi, Akalgarh, Nadeem Colony, Javed Colony, Dhoke Ratta, Jamia Masjid Road, Bani Chowk, Sadiqabad, Satellite Town, Bohar Bazaar, Muslim Town, Service Road and Chirah Road near Shamsabad.

The residents of these areas criticised the past and present governments saying they were equally responsible for the faulty sewerage system.

The Meteorological Department recorded 45mm of rain at Zero Point, 24mm at Golra, 71mm at Bokra, 4mm at Saidpur and 40mm at the airport in Islamabad and 118mm rain at Shamsabad, 27mm at Chaklala, 81mm at Pirwidhai, 68mm at Gawalmandi, 68mm at New Kattarian and 50mm at Kutchery.

A Met official said that monsoon currents are penetrating upper parts of the country. A westerly wave is also affecting upper parts of the country.

He said that rain-wind/thundershower is expected in Islamabad, Potohar region, Upper Punjab, Kashmir, Upper/Central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rainfall is also expected during the period. Hot and humid weather is expected in other parts of the country.

The Met Office predicted more rain on Wednesday and warned that heavy rains may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore.

When contacted, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Managing Director Azizullah Khan said the Leh Nullah rose to 11 feet at Kattarian and 12 feet at Gawalmandi. He said a pre-alert situation developed at 6am but then the intensity of rain decreased in the catchment areas and the water level gradually receded to 5.5 feet at Kattarian and two feet at Gawalmandi by afternoon.
