Rethinking the ugly duckling
This concerns the article “Rethinking the ugly duckling” by Hafsa Shaikh (YW, July 4). The article offered a fresh perspective on a fairy tale most of us have grown up with.
We mostly don’t question the story’s message, but the writer made us realise that waiting for others to accept us is not the same as believing in ourselves. The comparison between external validation and inner confidence was thoughtful and relevant, especially in today’s world, where many young people seek approval from others.

Why we can’t put the phone down
This is regarding the cover article, “Why we can’t put the phones down” by Zaina Safdar (YW, June 28).
The article explained that phone addiction is not simply a result of laziness, but is often linked to our fear of missing out and the way our brains seek instant rewards. This is an important point for young readers to understand. I also found the comparison with ancient humans seeking rare food interesting, as it made the concept easier to grasp.
However, I felt the ending could have been stronger. It encouraged readers to find their ‘why’, but it didn’t offer practical steps to help them reduce their screen time.

The cover article, “Why we can’t put the phone down,” by Zaina Safdar was commendable.
The writer didn’t simply blame technology, but explained why our brains are naturally drawn to instant rewards. The comparison between the fast-paced digital world and real life was particularly interesting, and it helped me understand why staying focused can feel so difficult.
The article encouraged me to be more mindful of how I spend my time instead of reaching for my phone whenever I get bored.
It was insightful and highly relevant for today’s generation.

Podcasts for kids
This is regarding the website review “Podcasts for kids” by Asif Ali (YW, June 28). After reading the review, I checked the site and found it quite helpful, just as the review mentioned.
What I liked most about it was that children can send in questions too, and the site also has transcripts of the episodes, making it easier for both children and parents to read along.
It was an informative review that encouraged me to discover a new way of learning.
