LAKKI MARWAT: Two terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation here on Monday night, police said.

Qudratullah Khan, the spokesperson for the Lakki Marwat district police officer, said in a statement that the operation was jointly conducted by police and Counter-Terrorism Department personnel after receiving “credible information about the presence of terrorists in the mountainous area within the limits of the Lakki city police station”.

Mr Khan said: “A fierce gunfight erupted when the law enforcers surrounded the terrorists’ hideout,” adding that two terrorists were killed during the exchange of fire.

He said one of the slain terrorists was identified as Mubashir, who was wanted by the CTD in various terrorism-related cases, including bomb blasts. The second individual was yet to be identified.

KP’s Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed appreciated the Lakki Marwat police and CTD personnel for conducting a “successful and result-oriented” operation.

Meanwhile, police averted a tragedy by defusing a roadside improvised explosive device in Karak district on Tuesday.

A police official said that the police, CTD officials and security forces conducted a joint search and strike operation in the mountainous terrain of Ghol Banda, Darga Shaheedan and adjacent hamlets following information about the presence of terrorists there.

He said that SP operations Nazir Hussain Khan, DSP Shah Duran Khan, DSP CTD Imranuddin, SHOs and other police units took part in the operation.

During the search operation, the law enforcement personnel were informed that terrorists had planted an IED near the dam area to target them, he maintained.

The official said that the law enforcers surrounded the area, restricted traffic movement and called experts of the bomb disposal squad to defuse the bomb.

The bomb was planted by the terrorists on the road leading to Darga Shaheedan to target police and law enforcement personnel, he claimed. He said that the timely action by the police helped thwart the nefarious and malicious plan of the enemies of peace.

On Monday, terrorists had targeted a police patrol with a roadside IED in the Karak’s Ghol Banda area. A police official had embraced martyrdom while six cops were injured in the bomb attack.
