ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Z. A. Bhutto said in the National Assembly today [Sept 3] that the Fifth Constitution Amendment Bill in no way touched the fundamentals of the Constitution. In a brief intervention Prime Minister Bhutto rebutted Opposition’s Maulana Mustafa al-Azhari who was asserting in his speech that the Constitution agreed upon by all parties, was being changed through various amendments to it.

Mr Bhutto said that the Constitution Fifth Amendment Bill has not touched the fundamentals of the Constitution, although Parliament was empowered to even change the fundamentals. The Parliament has every legal and moral right to amend the Constitution, he said. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Rawalpindi,] the “Manshoor Group”, created last year, was today [Sept 3] formally dissolved at a meeting of members from Rawalpindi and Lyallpur. A resolution passed by the meeting fully endorsed the decision taken by its leader, former Federal Minister and Deputy Secretary General of the People’s Party, Mr Khurshid Hasan Meer, to come back to the party fold. … …The resolution expressed full confidence in the leadership of Quaide Awam. …
