ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday handed over 50 electric vehicles to Islamabad Police to promote modern, secure and environmentally friendly policing.

At the vehicles handing over ceremony, the prime minister handed over the keys of the electric vehicles to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Inspector General of Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, along with other relevant officials, attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Shehbaz said protecting the lives and property of citizens was the government’s top priority.

“The government is providing all possible resources to bring Islamabad Police in line with the requirements of modern policing,” he said.

The prime minister praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for his efforts to modernise Islamabad police.

The PM said Islamabad police should serve as a role model for other cities in the country. He said police in the federal capital were being equipped with modern technology, equipment and other necessary resources to provide citizens a secure environment.

The new electric vehicles provided to Islamabad Police were aimed at promoting environmentally friendly and green policing, Sharif said, adding that the use of modern technology would further improve police performance and services.

The inspector general of Islamabad Police also briefed the prime minister on the newly established Capital Patrol Force, set up by Islamabad police to strengthen security in the federal capital.

PM Shehbaz was told that the new force had been established in line with his vision of a safe, smart and green capital.

The Capital Patrol Force would comprise a total of 200 police personnel. Each patrol unit would include one male and one female police officer. The force would also include motorcycle-riding officers to ensure a rapid response and effective patrolling in different areas.

All personnel of the Capital Patrol Force would be equipped with body cameras to improve transparency, monitoring and accountability in policing, the prime minister was told.

The briefing said 50 electric vehicles had been provided for the Capital Patrol Force. The vehicles would run entirely on electricity, significantly reducing fuel costs while also having a positive impact on the environment.

The prime minister was told that use of the new electric vehicles would save around Rs34 million ($120,000) a month in fuel costs, while the cost of each vehicle would be recovered through fuel savings in about 10.5 months.

He praised Islamabad police for its measures to use modern technology, promote green policing and protect citizens. He directed the authorities to ensure all necessary steps were taken to further strengthen the modern policing system.
