KARACHI: A total of 315 newborn babies have died of different illnesses at the Civil Hospital Mithi this year so far, the provincial health department stated on Wednesday.
The official information has been released in response to media reports putting the total death estimates of newborns at the government-run hospital in Mithi in eight months to 480.
Terming the reports contrary to facts, the health department statement said: “According to officially verified hospital records from January 1, 2026, to date, the actual number of newborn deaths stands at 315, which is significantly lower than the figures reported in the press.
“A total of 3,535 newborns received critical medical care in the neonatal intensive care unit and 2,819 infants recovered and successfully discharged,” it added.
A total of 328 complex cases were transferred to better-equipped medical centers for advanced treatment while 73 cases left against medical advice, it said.
The hospital administration clarified that out of the 315 total recorded deaths, 65 cases pertained to patients from outside the Tharparkar district.
“These included high-risk and critically ill patients referred from districts such as Mirpurkhas, Badin, and Umerkot, who arrived at the hospital in extremely fragile condition and with severe complications,” the statement said.
Out of the 315 total fatalities, the hospital administration said, 250 deaths occurred among local district residents, while 65 involved referred cases from outside the district.
