QUETTA: A constable was martyred and another seriously injured when unidentified armed men opened fire on a police checkpost in the Kank area of Mastung district on Thursday.
According to police, the attackers targeted the police post with gunfire before fleeing the scene following an exchange of fire with the personnel deployed there. Constable Izzatullah was martyred in the attack, while Constable Naseebullah sustained serious injuries.
Police shifted the body and the injured constable to a nearby hospital, where the body was handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities.
Following the attack, police and security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Officials said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.
Adviser to the Balochistan Chief Minister on Information Shahid Rind condemned the attack and expressed grief over the martyrdom of Constable Izzatullah.
In a statement, Mr Rind offered condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the early recovery of the injured constable. He said the police personnel had bravely confronted the attackers and that the incident would not weaken the government’s resolve to maintain peace.
The adviser said terrorist elements would not succeed in disrupting law and order in Balochistan through such “cowardly attacks”, adding that operations against anti-peace elements would continue.
He said the sacrifices of police and other law-enforcement personnel demonstrated the state’s commitment to restoring peace in the province. “The sacrifices of the martyrs will not go in vain,” he said. Mr Rind added that all resources were being utilised to ensure peace, stability and the protection of citizens across Balochistan.
