KARACHI: Five people were killed and two others injured when a wall of the dilapidated building of a government school collapsed on them in Orangi Town on Friday evening, police and rescue services officials said.

Mominabad SHO Shahbaz Yusuf told Dawn that the school was closed when the incident took place in Sector-11 of Orangi Town.

He said some people gathered there to consume narcotics at the site. The officer said some of them were attempting to extract steel from the wall when it collapsed on them.

Rescue teams and police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident.

The victims were retrieved from the debris and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where five of them were pronounced dead on arrival, the officer said.

He said the two other people were admitted for treatment.

Boy drowns

A boy drowned in a pond in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, officials said on Friday.

Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that three boys were swimming in a pond created after excavation work for an under-construction building near Civic Centre on Thursday.

After swimming, two of the boys managed to get out, while the third ostensibly sustained injuries after hitting a rock. He said they received information about the incident at around 11:12pm on Thursday.

The water rescue team managed to recover the body. The deceased was identified as Alliya Anthony, 12. He was a resident of nearby Isa Nagri.
