KARACHI: The anxiously awaited reduction in the export duty on cotton was announced on … [Sept 10] by the … Government. The duty on Desi varieties has been reduced from Rs 300/- to Rs 100/- per bale; and on other staple types of cottons from Rs 300/- to Rs 180/- per bale. It may be recalled that the export duty on cotton was raised in November last year because of the advantageous position Pakistan cotton enjoyed due to the Korean war and tight world position of cotton supplies. But the recent change-over in the world cotton position due to the bumper American crop demanded reduction in our duty with a view to bring our cotton on a more competitive basis with world values.

The average market guess during the past fortnight was of a reduction of duty to Rs 150/- per bale for staple-cottons, and to Rs 60/- per bale for Desi cottons. The … reduction it is hoped will enable Pakistan’s cotton [to wend] its way favourably in export channels during the season 1951-1952… .
