GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court on Saturday fixed the appeal of Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) candidate Imam Malik for hearing on Monday, September 14, against the decision of the GB Election Tribunal suspending his membership of the GB Assembly.
IPP candidate Imam Malik has filed a petition challenging the decision of GB Election Tribunal judge Mushtaq Ahmed to suspend his membership of the GB Assembly from GBA-16 Diamer-II.
According to the supplementary cause list, GB Supreme Appellate Court Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan will hear C. Misc. No. 208/2026 and Election Appeal No. 01/2026 at 11:00 am on Monday, September 14.
The GB Supreme Appellate Court issued notices to the respondents in the case to appear for hearing on Monday. A Gilgit-Baltistan election tribunal on Friday suspended the GB Assembly membership of Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party’s (IPP) Imam Malik from GBA-16 Diamer-II, directing the returning officer (RO) of the constituency to complete the verification and counting of postal ballot papers by September 16.
Election Tribunal judge Mushtaq Ahmed issued the verdict on a petition filed by PPP candidate Attaullah Khan challenging the general election result in the constituency. The Chief Justice of the GB Supreme Appellate Court, Sardar Muhammad Shamim, will decide on Monday whether the case is admissible.
Meanwhile, acting on the GB Election Tribunal judge Mushtaq Ahmed’s decision, the Returning Officer of GBA-16 Diamer-II announced on Sunday (today) that the consolidated result of GBA-16 Diamer-II would be prepared after counting and verification of postal ballots of the constituency.
According to the notices issued to all contesting candidates of the constituency, the RO has said, with reference to the GB Election Tribunal, Gilgit-Baltistan, vide Election Petition No. 1/2026 dated 11th September, 2026, on the preparation of the consolidated result of GBA-16 Diamer-II, that the consolidation of results, under Section 95 of the Elections Act, 2017, and Rule 85(2) of the Election Rules, 2017, will be carried out in the office of the Election Commissioner, Gilgit-Baltistan, Gilgit, at 10:00 AM on 13th September, 2026.
It said all contesting candidates of the constituency are therefore directed to attend the proceedings either in person or through their authorised representatives.
Islamuddin, Advocate, the counsel, told Dawn that the Supreme Appellate Court’s notices to the candidates will not affect the order of the GB Election Tribunal judge Mushtaq Ahmed’s decision to prepare the consolidated result after counting and verification of postal ballots of the constituency.
