THE feasibility report prepared by the Rapid Transit Cell about the integrated rapid transit system for the City [Karachi], is being referred to foreign consultants for expert opinion, it was learnt. The report has also been sent to the concerned agencies like the Pakistan Railways, the KMC, KDA, KESC etc for recording their views. The entire project is now estimated to cost Rs 1,300 million, including 30 per cent in foreign exchange, and is expected to be completed in five years. Under the scheme 5 1/2 mile tube will connect Merewether Tower with Liaquatabad (Post Office) via Sadar. The tube will then be connected with 11-mile electric tramway system covering Federal ‘B’ Area, North Nazimabad, and North Karachi. Besides, the existing Circular Railway will be improved at a cost of Rs. 150 million by providing road connections with the tube and the tramways. Trolley buses or ordinary buses will connect the remaining areas with the tube.
