I love watching and exploring maps, whether they are of cities or countries. There is just something so enticing about them that I always get lost observing the red, blue and black lines intersecting and going out of the boundaries, all telling us that this terrain comes in this state or that region. It is literally fantastic. So, while scrolling through some map sites, I suddenly came across artatlas.it, a site with a map, an art map!
Yes, you read that right, artatlas.it shows you art. Like actual artworks, museums, old churches and cultural spots, all plotted on a map, so you can see what’s near you or near wherever you’re travelling to. The tagline is “art, not places,” which explains everything in four words.
As I opened the page, I was happy to see no clutter. Just a heading, a line saying it’s for “serious cultural travel,” and a button that says “Open full-screen map.” As I clicked, it took me to a separate site, The Introvert Traveler’s version of the map, which is where the actual art map is.
The interface is simple, with a map in the centre and a left panel giving you options to search for artists, artworks and museums or you can select a city, country or artist.
You will also notice blue dots indicating museums or your search results on the map. Clicking on a dot zooms in on that place, allowing you to explore that particular country, city or museum more closely.
The site tells you where art physically exists in the world. Not just “the Louvre is in Paris” kind of obvious stuff, but you actually get to know smaller churches, lesser-known museums and spots that don’t usually show up when you Google art. This makes the site one of a kind and a big help specially if you’re an art lover or planning a trip.
Overall, the site is a gem for art lovers and anyone who enjoys discovering places beyond the usual tourist attractions. It turns a simple map into a way of exploring art, history and culture around the world.
