MEXICO CITY: The conference on economic cooperation among developing countries, which concluded early this morning [Sept 22], decided in effect to recommend to their governments consideration of Prime Minister Bhutto’s “important proposal” for a summit-level meeting of developing countries. “In short, the proposal has been formally launched with the adoption of this decision,” Mr Aziz Ahmed, leader of Pakistan’s delegation to the conference, told reporters. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said the terms in which the conference, also called the ‘Group of 77’, has transmitted this proposal is tantamount to the unanimous recommendation of the 80-odd nations attending it.
[Meanwhile, as reported from Jakarta,] The Indonesian Government revealed today [Sept 22] the existence of a secret plot to topple President Suharto. A number of leading citizens were said to have been misled to sign certain documents aimed at forcing Suharto to hand over the Presidency to Mohammad Hatta, formerly Vice-President of the Republic who co-signed the proclamation of independence with the late President Suekarno 31 years ago. The man who masterminded the plot was identified as Sawizo Kartowibowo.
