PESHAWAR: A cop was martyred and two suffered injuries on Thursday during an exchange of fire between three “suicide bombers” and the counter-terrorism department personnel in Garhi Sherdad area of Warsak Road on the outskirts of the provincial capital, a senior CTD official said on Thursday.

He said the CTD had received information about the presence of three suicide bombers in Garhi Sherdad, prompting authorities to plan and carry out an operation against them.

“The moment the CTD team reached the area, the terrorists opened fire at the raiding party,” he said, adding that one terrorist was killed, while two were being chased.

A video, captured by a quadcopter camera, shows one of the terrorists climbing from a house and making his way to another, running along the rooftops.

The terrorist, who succeeded in climbing up to the main door of the third house, was targeted right on top of the wall by the CTD personnel who had cordoned off the entire area.

“A cop embraced martyrdom, while two others were injured,” the official said. Another senior CTD official said that the department was working to identify the group of terrorists.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the incident and extended condolences to the family of the martyred official.

“My prayers go out to the two injured officers, and I pray for their swift and complete recovery,” he said.

The governor said that KP residents remained deeply indebted to the brave sons of the soil who put their lives on the line so that others could live in safety.

Funeral of martyred official Afaaq Khan was offered at Peshawar’s police headquarters.

The participants included Mr Kundi, cabinet members, provincial police chief Zulfiqar Hameed, additional IG of the CTD Jawad Qamar, Peshawar CCPO Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad, military officers and relatives of the martyred cop.
