GILGIT: A committee formed by the prime minister for political reforms in Gilgit-Baltistan has de­­ci­ded to form a larger committee to extend the scope of consultations to bring a constitutional amendm­e­­nt that would declare the autonomous region a provisional constitutional pro­vince and give it representation in parliament.

A statement issued by the law ministry said Fed­eral Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar chaired a meeting of the PM’s subcommittee constituted to address the issues faced by Gilgit-Baltistan.

GB Chief Minister Amjad Hussain and Opposition Le­­a­­der Hafiz Hafeezur Reh­­man, who participated in the meeting, briefed the participants on the political, constitutional, legal, ad­mi­nistrative and economic issues facing the region.

The meeting reviewed various options and discussed practical measures to ensure effective political and economic rights, meaningful participation in the national mainstream, and development of the region.

Mr Tarar said the committee was examining various options, while consultations were underway with the GB government and other stakeholders.

Chief Minister Amjad Hussain called for a comprehensive and sustainable framework, while Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman said the views and aspirations of the GB people should be taken into consideration while finding a constitutional solution for the region.
