SWABI: An official of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation here on Saturday said that around 150,000 teenage girls would be vaccinated against cervical cancer in the district during a campaign starting next month.
Talking to reporters here, Dr Anees Ahmad, who heads the vaccination campaign in the district, said that his department had launched an awareness campaign to educate people about the vaccination drive.
Dr Anees spoke about cervical cancer, its prevention and vaccination. He said the vaccine would be administered to girls aged nine to 14 to protect them against cervical cancer.
“Cervical cancer can be prevented with timely vaccination,” he added.
He urged journalists to help create awareness among the people about the ongoing awareness campaign for the prevention and treatment of the disease.
Meanwhile, two people were killed in separate incidents here on Saturday, said police. It was learnt that one Yasir Muhammad, 27, was killed in a firing incident in Pajman village. Sources said that unidentified men opened fire on Yasir, killing him on the spot. The armed men escaped after the incident.
Rescue 1122 Swabi personnel shifted the body to the District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem. Police have registered a first information report and launched an investigation.
In another incident, a man identified as Riaz Khan, 40, was killed when two unidentified persons opened fire on him near the link road on Swabi-Mardan Road.
The body of the deceased was taken to DHQ hospital for autopsy. The motives behind the killings could not be known till filing of the report.
