ISLAMABAD: The PPP on Tuesday “welcomed” an invitation from the opposition alliance, the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP), to attend a multiparty conference, for which the venue and date have not been decided.

The PPP, which is a PML-N ally in the Centre, said it “welcomes the move” and would forward the invitation to Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for a decision and the opposition alliance would be informed of his stance.

A TTAP delegation, led by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, called on PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari at the party’s Central Secretariat and formally invited the ruling party to the moot.

The delegation included Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Senator Zeeshan Akhunzada and TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai. Both sides discussed the political situation in the country, supremacy of the Constitution, strengthening of democratic institutions, contacts between political parties and other matters.

Speaking to Dawn after the meeting, TTAP spokesperson Yousafzai said the multiparty conference would be held after PTI’s protest, which is scheduled for Oct 4.

“We have started a meeting with the representatives of political parties so that the date and venue for the moot is finalised,” he said, adding that since the PPP had taken a clear stance over new provinces, the opposition had decided to invite it as well.

The invitation, however, would not be extended to the PML-N and the MQM, he said, adding that the ANP and the Jamaat-i-Islami would be invited.
