Website review: Free rice

PLAYING quiz is great to activate and energise your grey cells, but have you ever thought of donating to someone by playing just a quiz?

Yes, we are talking about donating and this can easily be done from home without you giving anything or spending money. Isn’t it a great and simple way to help feed the hungry around the world? So for such a great cause, we are going to fill the bowls with rice and donate by only playing some addictive quizzes.

Freerice is a non-profit website that is owned by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme. The website has two goals: provide education to everyone for free and help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

Believe me kids, it’s a great feeling to feed someone somewhere in the world, a person who will eat rice — the rice you helped him/her get just by playing a quiz game. All you have to do is register on this site and see how much grains you are donating by answering the never-ending questions. These quizzes are divided in subjects which such as human anatomy, humanities, English, math, chemistry, language learning, geography and sciences.

You click any subject and answer the multiple-choice questions, or answer them randomly.

With every correct answer to this site’s endless, ten grains of rice are donated to the UN World Food Programme. Players can get enormously motivated by the bowl of donated rice that fills up as correct answers roll in and by the challenge of climbing to more difficult levels. (A graphic on the side shows bowls of rice as they fill and accumulate.)

Users can create profiles with pictures and join groups. It’s easy to track progress as you climb levels and raise the amount of rice. The website creators urge every child and adult to visit and donate on Freerice.

With over two billion people active online today, imagine what we could achieve if we all took time to ‘rice up’ against hunger?
