Most superhero sequels feature heroes who have always been good, but a few years ago, Megamind shook things up. Launched from a planet like Krypton, Megamind, crash-landed in Metro City’s prison instead of landing on a farm like Superman.
Although released 14 years after the original, Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate is set immediately after the first film’s events. Megamind, the protector of Metro City is joined by Chum — formerly known as Minion in the first film — as his sidekick, while reporter Roxanne also plays a pivotal part in the story.
Kids are in for an action-packed, laugh-filled adventure that teaches friendship and doing the right thing. While the original ‘Megamind’ flipped the superhero script with its fresh take on what it means to be a hero, he faces a bigger challenge in the sequel. Here, the blue, big-headed supervillain-turned-hero has to subdue the team of villains — The Doom Syndicate — he formerly used to lead and who wants to take over his Metro City. What’s interesting is how Megamind juggles his past as a villain and his present as a hero. The gadgets he used are impressive, but even with such tech, he soon realises that without Chum, he cannot defeat the lot alone.
The twist in the tale comes when Megamind parts ways with Chum early in the film, but recognises early that he can’t defeat the Doom Syndicate without him. The other big change here is in the voice-over cast — the titular characters were originally voiced by Will Ferrel and Tina Fey, but in this 83-minute movie, they have been replaced by Keith Ferguson and Laura Post who do a good job.
The Doom Syndicate live up to their name — powerful, but hilariously incompetent. Always fighting for leadership, they were never on one page and had diverse opinions. They were easily distracted and were quite predictable, despite having too much power.
Roxanne’s strong personality keeps Megamind on the straight and narrow while Kieko Morita, Megamind’s No. 1 fan and a young social media influencer, adds some surprising moments. She catches both the audience and the good guys off guard.
A movie for the whole family, Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate highlights the value of friendship and the challenges that come with it. It also delivers important lessons on teamwork and honesty. With its colourful animation, funny dialogue and thrilling action sequences, this movie is sure to keep kids entertained from start to finish. A perfect pick for kids who love superheroes, slapstick humour and a story that celebrates teamwork and second chances.
