If you have not read Asterix and Obelix comics, you must have heard about them from your parents. Asterix is one of the most cherished figures in French popular culture, and his loyal friend Obelix also enjoys a strong and devoted following. Created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, they were first introduced in 1959.

Asterix and Obelix return in a modern reboot set in 50BC, during Julius Caesar’s reign. They live in the only unconquered village of the Roman Empire, Gaul. Their secret? A powerful magic potion brewed by their wise and eccentric druid, Getafix, gives the villagers superhuman strength.

Although the main storyline of the five-episode miniseries is adapted from the original Asterix and the Big Fight comic, the first episode is a loose adaptation of the illustrated tale How Obelix Fell into the Magic Potion When He Was a Little Boy, focusing on Asterix and Obelix’s childhood.

During preparations for an impending Roman assault, Obelix accidentally hits Getafix on the head with a large stone, causing the druid to lose both his memory and the formula for the magic potion. With time running out, Asterix and Obelix must work together to restore Getafix’s memory while fending off increasingly daring Roman forces.

In this version of the Roman era, we see things not there until the 20th century — electricity and roller coasters, theme parks, TV hosts and even a Roman take on social media. Julius Caesar, ever the modern emperor, uses ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ options while watching the Gauls’ antics on a giant mosaic screen, parodying social media reactions as if he’s scrolling through an ancient Roman version of TikTok.

Full of pop culture nods, we see characters like Fastanfurius, Annabarbera, Twinpix, Beetlejus and Mileycirus (paying homage to Fast & Furious, Hanna-Barbera, Twin Peaks, Beetlejuice and pop icon Miley Cyrus), as well as Captain Armorica, a literal shield-slinging Roman who parodies Captain America. In the final battle, Fulliautomatix (read again) summons his hammer with Thor-like telekinesis, followed by an ‘Indomitables Assemble’ moment.

The Big Fight is co-directed by Alain Chabat and Fabrice Joubert and recently released on Netflix, Asterix and Obelix show that true friendship means standing by each other, even in tough times. Obelix may make mistakes, but he never leaves Asterix’s side. Their bond reminds us that loyal friends can help us face any challenge, anytime.
