AFTER the dismal performance of the national cricket team in the last few months, one feels it is high time we honoured our past stars who shaped the game and earned historic victories for Pakistan. The proposed Pakistan Cricket Museum should be located at the National Stadium in Karachi, and serve as a national institution dedicated to preserving, celebrating and promoting Pakistan’s rich cricketing heritage. The museum would showcase historic memorabilia, photographs, archives, trophies and equipment as well as personal stories of legendary cricketers, coaches, administrators, umpires, commentators, journalists, groundsmen and others.
The National Stadium is a particularly fitting location because it has been the venue for many of Pakistan’s most historic cricketing moments. Pakistan never lost a Test match at the venue for over 45 years. That in itself is history. A museum at the venue would allow visitors to engage not only with the exhibits, but also with the physical setting in which much of that history unfolded. Interactive displays, multimedia experiences, oral histories and cricket simulators will help bring the grand story of Pakistani cricket to life.
Beyond preserving the past, the museum would serve as an educational and research resource, and inspire future generations. It can be projected as a Pakistan Cricket Heritage Centre, and combine a museum, archives, research facility, Hall of Fame and educational space, ensuring that the achievements, memories and stories of Pakistan’s cricketing journey are preserved and shared for generations to come. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should explore the possibility of constituting a committee of cricket historians, archivists, former players and museum professionals to develop a feasibility plan for the project.
The museum should be supported by a robust framework for security, conservation and collection management, ensuring that priceless cricketing artefacts, archives and rare collections are preserved as per international standards. The great cricketers who gave Pakistan some of its most unforgettable moments deserve due recognition, and our future generations deserve to know what a powerhouse the country was in the world of cricket.
