THE LAND OF JUDGES: Peelowains is known as the Land of Judges as it has produced many judges, lawyers and civil servants. Yet, the village lacks several basic facilities. The most urgent need is a degree college for girls. The village also faces problems of clean drinking water, sanitation and the lack of natural gas. The Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal needs regular cleaning and desilting, while its bridges should be properly inspected for safety. Certain settlements also need electrification. Local farmers face several agricultural and irrigation-related problems that require due government attention. A village that has contributed so much to education and public service deserves better basic facilities.

UNREGISTERED MOTORCYCLES: Driving a car has become a nuisance in Karachi due to the overwhelming number of motorcycles on the roads. These motorcyclists have no regard for traffic rules. They ride left, right and centre, and suddenly appear out of nowhere, putting themselves as well as others at risk. The situation demonstrates a total collapse of the transport system. All the relevant stakeholders are simply interested in their own benefits. According to a rough estimate, Karachi has more than six million motorbikes, and many of them happen to be unregistered. The number keeps escalating every year, because no one cares.

DESERTED PARK: I happened to visit Benazir Bhutto Park recently and found it in a dilapidated condition. A park that should serve as a space for relaxation has lost its charm due to the negligence of the relevant quarters. In a city that already has a limited number of parks, this recreational facility has been reduced to a rubble. According to rumours doing the rounds, the park would soon be converted into a residential area, which is a cause of great concern. Public parks promote healthy activities and bring communities together. The authorities concerned should restore this neglected public facility.
